Read What Your Colleagues Are Saying About This Course
Your program was exceptional! Not only did I brush up on needed review material, but I actually scored 50 points higher than my last recertification and scored a 100% on the Emergency Medicine section of the board! Thanks for creating such a comprehensive program
Damon Christian Kimes, MD, Conyers, GA
Well, I finally heard from ABEM and I’m very happy with an 85, Pass. In fact, it is one point better than 2005 and I have been out of mainstream EM for 15 years. I have been working in urgent care since 2000 and I must say a lot of material has changed or is new since leaving EM. For example, I’ve never used RSI nor bedside U/S. One of your test taking tips was to jot down anything new and research it on the internet so I did a lot of that. I also had 4 pages of pearls to review a couple of days before the test. I listened to each speaker two complete times and enjoyed the rewind and slow/fast toggle. Each of the speakers were well prepared and I learned a lot from each one. I probably will not take your course again at age 72 although I said 10 years ago I wouldn’t try to recertify in 2015! I felt like much of the material was from LLSA’s and I would have studied them more on my own had I thought about it sooner. Obviously your course prepared me for the ConCert or I would not have passed it. I studied very long and hard from the videos and the binder. I did think the practice test questions were much more in depth than the lecture material presented. I would recommend your course because it saves money not having to travel and you can study at your own pace. This is way too much material for me to absorb in a week long endurance run. The main reason I took your course was your track record. Everyone passed last year and that can’t be challenged. Thanks to all for helping me maintain my certification for another 10 years.”
Stephen Parks, MD, Greer, SC
“Having been 14 years out of the specialty, it became clear that I needed a dedicated review system to help review important topics in EM. I found the courses informative, insightful in strategy test taking, and amazingly helpful in reviewing topics we rarely see yet need to know. I entered the CONCERT with confidence and learned last week that I easily passed. It does take time to review the material, yet this did not involve a live course during my study. I used the videos and power points to build my knowledge base and took many exams to assure successful understanding of the material. Thanks API!”
Marlin Schul, MD, Lafayette, IN
“I have been practicing urgent care medicine for the last 8 years, after 25 years in the ER, and I wanted to recertify. I looked at a few courses and decided on The Pass Machine not only for the content but also the promise to refund my tuition if I didn't pass. I needed as much help as I could get because I don't see complex cases anymore and haven't for a while. I found the Pass Machine to be convenient to my schedule, reviewing lectures when I could and then repeating the more complicated ones. The lectures were concise and the information was up to date, and presented in a more informal and entertaining way. I particularly enjoyed the cardiology lecture, which can be a dry topic but this presenter really kept my attention. Also, the practice questions were very pertinent and helped me decide the topics I needed to give more attention. When it came time to take the exam, I felt I had confidence and reassurance that I could actually pass it, especially after I had been out of the ER for so long. This was probably my last recert exam and I am very thankful that with the help of The Pass Machine I passed.”
Patricia Cook, MD, Apple Valley, MN
“I found this course to be well-attuned to the ABEM Recertification Exam. It defragged my brain and set me in a will-pass-the-exam frame of mind! And I did pass! I also received a high passing grade. Thank you Jack et al.”
Victor Estraba, MD, Woodbury, CT
“I attended The Pass Machine course in Chicago in August of 2011 and took the Board exam October 4, 2011. Other than reviewing the notes and lectures, I did not do any other preparation for the Board exam. Besides working full time in the ER, I had 6 children under the age of 12 at the time, so as you can imagine, not much review took place! I am convinced that attending the course alone enabled me to pass the test. This was my third recert (and last!), so I have attended other review courses. This was far and away the best.”
Beth Lux, MD, Green Bay, WI
“My experience was a little different because I hadn't done emergency medicine for several years, so I had to be able to review quickly and thoroughly. I also wasn't able to go to the course. The review book and the on-line material were excellent. I even took the book camping in Boundary Waters, MN. When the ConCert exam came, I passed with an 87%. Thanks for having a great review course!”
George Nobile, MD, Louisville, K
“Passing the boards, my fourth time with ABEM, is a big relief. I credit the American Physician course ( on-line lectures and printed materials ) as having served me well. Your course gave me a single-source way to review the necessary topics in a comprehensive way, and I found home-access very convenient. It's lengthy---it's a mountain of material to tackle---but the speakers are well-chosen and the subjects well-organized. The cost is not insignificant but where else could you get something this solidly put together? It is a good value.”
James L. Brewer III, MD, Lovingston, VA
“Excellent course! I entirely credit The Pass Machine with my passing the ConCert exam with 83% score. Not bad for a last minute study anchored solely on the combined Pass Machine 2011 and 2012 courses. For me it was as good as the OHIO ACEP and NEMBER courses that I took for my previous re-certifications. Thanks a million Jack and all your team.”
Netanel Herscovitch, MD, Lincolnwood, IL

American Board of Emergency Medicine Covid-19 Update
This information is updated weekly. For the most current update, please visit the ABEM website.
The latest as of February 24, 2021:
UPDATE: February 8, 2021: ABEM Committed to Maintaining Certification Standards - The American Board of Emergency Medicine (ABEM) understands that this past year was particularly challenging for emergency physicians, especially early career physicians. Every physician member of the ABEM Board of Directors is clinically active and understands the disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. The disruptions affecting our specialty have also affected ABEM certification.
At the onset of the pandemic, ABEM took quick action to protect certification and board eligibility, including extending board eligibility for physicians whose initial certification was delayed due to COVID. The closing of Pearson VUE testing centers and the elimination of large gatherings created major disruptions to certification, including cancellations of the ABEM Oral Certification Examinations. Both examiners and candidates supported the cancellations as being a responsible action to take in 2020.
Consequently, ABEM pivoted to a new Oral Exam process and began testing in the virtual environment. ABEM administered the first virtual Oral Exam in December 2020 and will be administering three additional exams in early 2021. ABEM expects to examine a record number of candidates this year, administering the Oral Exam to most, if not all, physicians seeking certification in 2021.
It is true that we are in the midst of unprecedented circumstances, but despite this situation, ABEM expects to have a solution to remedy delays in certification by the end of 2021. While notice for some exams has been shorter than ideal, ABEM is working diligently to improve the process. The pandemic has created scheduling challenges for everyone involved, including the nearly 500 ABEM oral examiners, all of whom are clinically active emergency physicians themselves.
Since its inception, the purpose of ABEM certification has been to independently and validly verify a physician’s competencies that have been acquired during residency training. That verification must be fair, valid, reliable, and nationally based rather than on local or regional practice variations. Over the years, ABEM has published significant data that support the validity of the Oral Exam. Eliminating the Oral Exam would diminish the rigor of ABEM certification and reduce the distinction between ABEM-certified physicians and other physicians and providers of emergency care. The stakes for the public and our profession are too high to not maintain this differentiation.
The ABEM Board of Directors is committed to providing physicians passing the 2019 and 2020 Qualifying Exams the opportunity to become certified in 2021. We will communicate about these efforts in as timely a manner as possible.
The past year has taxed our community in unprecedented ways. I am grateful for your service and proud of our Emergency Medicine community. I am confident there are brighter days ahead.
Sincerely,
Mary Nan Mallory, M.D., M.B.A.
President

Virtual Oral Exam Frequently Asked Question
UPDATE: February 3, 2021: ABEM Exploring Options for Fall Oral Exams - ABEM is working to provide those who passed the Qualifying Exam in 2020 with an opportunity to take the Oral Certification Exam in 2021. ABEM will provide information about fall dates by no later than the end of February, and assignments for the fall will be given by May 1.
ABEM values the Oral Exam as part of the process to become ABEM certified and has invested in pivoting our delivery to meet physician needs. We recognize the frustration that many individuals, including Emergency Medicine candidates and physicians, are experiencing due to COVID-19. Please know we are focused on providing all candidates the opportunity to become certified as soon as possible without compromising the value of certification.
The ABEM Board is committed to providing the opportunity to take the Oral Certification Exam in 2021 to all who were affected by the postponed exams in 2020.
While the exam format has pivoted to virtual, the exam is administered by clinically active Emergency Medicine physician volunteers, who are also under scheduling constraints and high demands with the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
The ABEM Board of Directors is aggressively exploring options for the fall Oral Certification Examinations. More information about the Oral Exam administrations in Fall 2021 will be provided in February.

UPDATE: December 18, 2020: ABEM Successfully Pivots to Virtual Format for Oral Certification Exam - After postponing the in-person 2020 Oral Certification Exams due to COVID-19, the American Board of Emergency Medicine (ABEM) focused its efforts to help emergency physicians achieve ABEM certification. The shift from in-person to virtual allowed the exam to be administered during the COVID pandemic giving recently graduated emergency physicians the opportunity to become ABEM certified. “We are proud of the exam and everyone involved” shared ABEM president, Mary Nan Mallory, M.D., M.B.A. “We understand how stressful this time has been for emergency physicians and we’re grateful for their patience as we’ve retooled the oral certification exam to meet their needs.” Testing dates for three virtual Oral Exam administrations in early 2021 have been identified and ABEM looks forward to offering this opportunity to more oral exam candidates.
