Every physician, no matter how qualified, needs to pass the Nephrology Board Certification Exam and they want to feel confident doing so. If you are planning to take the initial board examination after recently completing your fellowship or if you are preparing for the maintenance of certification (MOC) examination, you need to prioritize exam study time between your personal life and professional responsibilities.

Physicians like you seek the most effective methods to study for the Nephrology Board Exam because there is more to life than just studying for board exams. Traditionally, board review material was limited to textbook resources and specialty journal review questions. Board review courses were concentrated in major cities and held at hotel ballrooms requiring a scheduled flight or driving time, hotel and meal costs, and delegation of family and practice responsibilities while you were engrossed in lectures. Now, there’s an easier way to prepare to pass the Nephrology Board Exam – an online Nephrology Board Review course.

But, before you dive into your board preparation, it’s important to understand what’s tested on the ABIM Nephrology Exam, and how that knowledge should shape your study plan.

What Is Tested on the ABIM Nephrology Board Certification Exam?

The ABIM Nephrology Board Certification Exam is a written examination designed to assess whether a specialty-trained physician has the knowledge to practice medicine with the skills, experience, and clinical judgment necessary to provide excellent patient care. Any individual preparing to sit for this examination has likely also completed another board examination, such as the ABIM Internal Medicine Board Certification Exam. You can either sit for the initial exam as the final step in completing fellowship requirements or you can sit for the maintenance of certification exam to stay current with medical knowledge and clinical skills as well as extend your board certification status.

Exam Blueprint

The Nephrology Approval Committee and the American Board of Internal Medicine determine the Nephrology Exam’s medical content which is similar for both the initial certification exam and the continuing medical education maintenance of certification exam. The medical content for each category is as follows: chronic kidney disease and peritoneal dialysis (approximately 25% of the exam), acute kidney injury and intensive care unit nephrology (15%), and glomerular disease and vascular disease (11%). Hypertension and kidney transplantation target 10% of the medical content followed by acid-base and potassium disorders (9%); sodium and water abnormalities (7%); pharmacology (5%); tubular, interstitial, and cystic disorders (4%); and calcium, phosphorus, and magnesium disorders and stone disease (4%). Multiple choice questions describe patient scenarios and ask about tasks performed such as diagnosis, testing, treatment, risk assessment or prognosis, and basic science knowledge and disease pathophysiology as it applies to patient care.

Do I Need to Take a Nephrology Board Review Course?

Deciding to use a board review is a personal decision only you can make. Physicians know all about the time, effort, and dedication it takes to be part of the medical profession and make decisions daily for patients to improve their lives. With other personal and professional commitments, it is important for our professional self-care to carve out time to properly prepare for the exam by completing a comprehensive review of relevant areas of medicine, especially taking the time to review chronic kidney disease as that topic is 22% of the exam questions.

Online access to review courses offers several advantages for board preparation, including a collection of intensive review material, comprehensive lectures, numerous practice tests, and dedicated time to review medical content. Other features may include feedback mechanisms to chart where study content requires more review and an introduction to research and literature about recent medical findings. Structured learning tools such as review courses, especially those available online, allow us to focus on what we know and fill the knowledge gaps that may have widened during the years after medical school, fellowship, and the initial Internal Medicine Board Exam.

A review course offered online can provide a condensed methodology to cover topics pertinent to the subspecialty of medicine being tested, such as nephrology. Study tips to be successful in test taking can include choosing the best board review course available, organizing dedicated time for intensive review, and mapping the most relevant material and board-style questions to concentrate your study focus. Both written material and personalized lectures can thoroughly explain the medical concepts being presented, practicing test questions can increase confidence, and understanding the explanations provided can increase your knowledge base for the actual exam.
