After graduating with a bachelor’s degree in biomedical engineering from the University of Southern California and with his certification as a Polysomnography Technologist (RPSGT, Sleep Technologist) and acquiring research training with Scientist Dr. Michael C.K. Khoo, Edwin established the sleep laboratory branch for the UCLA Cousins Center for Psychoneuroimmunology with Principal Scientist Dr. Michael R. Irwin. Edwin managed various sleep employees and interns conducting sleep-immune research on numerous NIH grants investigating alcoholism, cocaine addiction, and breast cancer survivors. During this time, he earned his master’s degree in Physiological Science from the University of California Los Angeles with Principal Scientists Dr. Ronald M. Harper and Dr. Mary A. Woo in Neural Imaging using Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) in Obstructive Sleep Apnea and Heart Failure Patients. From there he began a fruitful career establishing and helping develop hospital/clinic departments from sleep labs, clinics, neurology services and cardiac services to ACGME Accredited Fellowship programs to train physicians and research centers.
Edwin has earned his doctorate in education (EdD, as of summer 2023) from the University of Southern California with his dissertation focus on “Improving Healthcare by Increasing Underrepresented Students in Medical School”. Edwin has served on the Board of Directors for the California Sleep Society, specifically planning the yearly education symposium, and is currently a Gold Standard Sleep Study Scoring Panelist with the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) for their Artificial Intelligence credentialling program.
