Dr. Shafazand is a board-certified pulmonary, critical care, and sleep specialist with a master’s degree in Health Research and Policy from Stanford University. She has a strong commitment to patient-centered research, exemplified by her funded research which most recently includes her role as Principal Investigator of a Neilson Foundation grant evaluating intermittent hypoxia, neuroplasticity, and sleep apnea, as well as PI of a study evaluating disparities in COVID-19 medical, psych-social, and financial outcomes in underserved communities in Miami-Dade and Broward County, Florida.
Dr. Shafazand teaches health policy, epidemiology, and population health to dual degree MD/MPH students and in her role as Director of University of Miami MD/MPH program she has mentored many students in population health research and community outreach. She has chaired several committees at ATS and plays an active role in undergraduate and post graduate medical education locally and at the national level. Dr. Shafazand has many publications, book chapters and serves as Associate Editor of several key journals in her areas of specialty.
