Dr. Braman’s academic career began at The Alpert Medical School of Brown University where he achieved the rank of Professor of Medicine in 1989, serving as Division Director of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine 2000- 2009 and Director of the Division of Pulmonary, Sleep Medicine and Critical Care Medicine at Brown’s major university teaching hospital, The Rhode Island Hospital, from 1973 until 2009. Dr. Braman is currently Professor Emeritus at Brown University. He joined the faculty of the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai as Professor of Medicine in 2012, attaining Professor Emeritus status in June 2020. He is currently on the teaching faculty at the West Palm Beach VA Medical Center and faculty member of the Pulmonary/Critical Care Fellowship at the Schmidt College of Medicine of Florida Atlantic University.
Dr. Braman received the honorary title of Master Fellow of the American College of Chest Physicians in 2017 and received the ACCP GSK Distinguished Scholar in Respiratory Health Award 2007-2010, an award given to develop a Chronic Care Model for COPD and its co-morbidities. In 2017 he also received the College Medalist Award from the ACCP for meritorious service in furthering progress in the field of diseases of the chest. He has been a member of the ACCP Cough Guidelines and Expert Panel Committee since 2005, has been an editorial board member of several leading pulmonary journals and authored or co-authored over a hundred peer-reviewed articles in addition to many book chapters. Dr. Braman completed fellowships at the University of Pennsylvania and the Walter Reed Army Medical Center, a residency and internship in Internal Medicine at Philadelphia General Hospital, and he received his medical degree from Temple University School of Medicine in Philadelphia. He served in the US Army Medical Corps, attaining the rank of Major.
