"I did pass the course- listened to all the lectures and worked through all the questions. I still don't know my score. I listened to the lectures about 1 a night and it was a good review of general surgery in bite sized pieces which was very helpful. I also did Sesap 15 and frankly both of them were helpful. I would highly recommend the course. In the past I had traveled to take a course but the online format was much easier with my practice situation and family life and overall a lot cheaper. Overall the lecturers were great, esp. Transplant surgeon. Loved his sense of humor and line about JCAHO- Jackaho!"
Norman F. McGowan III, MD, Greenville, AL
"I would like to thank American Physician Institute for making this course available. I was successful in passing my American Board of Surgery recertification exam. The material was well organized and covered all of the pertinent topics. I did the online course which allowed me to study at my own pace based upon my busy schedule. Being able to go back and re-watch the lectures with the written materials was invaluable. No question in my mind that this course contributed to my success on my recertification exam. Again, thank you."
Carl Lange, MD, Gibsonia, PA
"Life gets busy and I just caught myself having do do my General Surgery Boards Recertification within 2 months. I was not sure I had time to review it all while working. The Pass Machine course allowed me to review the material in my computer and my iPhone. I was able to listen to the lectures while traveling back and forth and log in to do questions in my computer whenever I got a chance. On the day of the test on average I completed my test questions within 50% of the time and had plenty time to review my questions. I passed and highly recommend the course."
Daniel De Oliveira, MD, Halingen, TX
"Happy to inform that I passed my recertification test. Your online lectures were excellent and provided the information needed not only to pass the test but to keep you updated on some new standards of care. I did find your practice exams were much more difficult than the actual exam. Otherwise your course was a very positive experience. Thank you."
Yong Yoon, MD, Saginaw, MI
"I enjoyed the ease of use/format of the online materials. It certainly helped me accomplish the daunting task of preparing for recertification which I am proud to report I passed."
Joey Barrios III, MD, Lafayette, LA
"I passed, what more can I say. Given that I have only practiced vascular surgery for the past decade...a good thing!"
Alan Mintz, MD, Thousand Oaks, CA
"I passed. I could not have done it without your superb course. Thank you, thank you, thank you."Barbara Schneider, MD, Toms River, NJ
"The Surgery Couse was very informative and current about all the sub-specialities. Without attending it, I doubt that I could have passed the examination. I would recommend this course very strongly to any one wanting to pass the examination and remain current in the different fields. I have not seen any other course that could compare to this."
Ahmed Khan, MD, Piano, TX
"The American Physician Institute is holding this course in general surgery with speakers of first class in their respective field of expertise. Very focused and up to date in the current surgical needs of our practice in surgery. I recommend this course without hesitation to anyone looking for a deep review - Thank you Dr. Krasuski for your vision."
Luis Serentill, MD, Miami, FL
“An excellent course. I would not want to face the exam without the information provided in this course.”
Christopher Capel, MD, Casa Grande, AZ
"The webinar format for this course was fantastic. It allowed me to watch lectures and review subjects at my own leisure, without the hassle of travel and accommodations. Great job. In addition, the practice exams allow one to review his or her knowledge base."
Anthony Lowham, MD, Lander, WY
“THANK YOU for your help in the recent recertification general surgery exam. I found your review course very useful and practical. You have an excellent team of teachers. Needless to say, as we get older it is very difficult to sit and read books to prepare for exams. I am glad I took your course – it helped me to pass the exam with ease. I highly recommend your course to anyone who is to take the recertification exam. Please convey my sincere thanks to everyone in your team.”
Shanmugam Lakshmanan, MD, Salem, IL
“This year I will be taking my 3rd recertification examination. I had taken 3 recertification review courses before. I believe yours is the best of all I have experienced.”
John Chacko, MD
“I called a colleague whose name I saw on your flyer. She recommended the course and helped in my decision to sign-up for the home study course. Although I had already purchased another program, I liked the guarantee and wanted to pass, hope to pass on the 1st attempt on year 10 before expiration. I did not have time in a busy practice to leave town and like the ability to go to the lectures, test questions and slides on-line right from my desk at work or home and not have to have the DVD’s with me at all times. Just login and I’m there!”
Greggory N. Angier, MD, Mt. Pleasant, TX
“The quality of the course material, its design and the speakers were in one word – Excellent!!! The format of the home study course and webinars combined with practice exams that were easily accessible on any computer with internet access and my mobile phone allowed me, a busy community general surgeon, to make the best use of my time and review some unfamiliar topics more than once. Re-certification exam aside, I am a better, more informed and educated surgeon today because of this course. Thanks!”
Kranthi Achanta, MD, Fremont, CA
“The course was unbelievably helpful. There just seemed to be so much more information to learn this time around. Your course covered most topics on the test. The home study allowed me to complete the course at my leisure and I have listened to many of the lectures over and over. I now look forward to attending the Master Trauma course. By the way, I passed!”
Thomas Vinson, MD, Columbus, MS
“The preparation that the American Physician Institute provided for the board MOC exam was excellent! All of the information was either in the lectures or in the binder. I was able to take the exam with confidence after reviewing the information and taking some of the practice tests.”
Elizabeth Harvey, MD, Naperville, IL
“Great review prep course. I am a busy general surgeon with a private practice and cover a busy ER every other night. Am pres med staff with lots of meetings and issues to deal with. Difficult to find quality time to organize my review and study material, but no need you did it all. Easy to access webinars and practice tests. Felt super comfortable walking into the exam and especially after leaving it. Very prepared, a great experience, no stress with this exam after the course.”
George Tershakovec, MD, Homestead, FL
“This course left me well prepared and confident for the recertification exam. There were no surprises and I felt each question was addressed during the course. The practice exams were outstanding and close variations were encountered. I breezed through the exam with time to spare. When I left the exam I knew I had passed thanks to your course.”
Chris Wagner, MD, Appleton, WI
“Took the home study course. Excellent distillation of information. The web-based course allows for excellent use of spare time anywhere, even with the iPhone.”
John Yatsu, Austin, TX
“I took the online course, and it was perfect for me. I reviewed the lectures in the evenings and weekends just a few weeks before my Recert. I had no trouble finishing or passing, thanks to this course!”
James Redmann, MD, Covington, LA
"An excellent course with great technological enhancements and many relevant sample questions."
Robert Weiner, MD, Kalaheo, HI
“If you are considering a single source or course to use to prepare for general surgery recertification, The Pass Machine should be at the top of the list. I just successfully completed my third recertification and found that The Pass Machine definitely works. Try it – you’ll like it!”
Phillip Lindsay, MD, Alexandria, CA

Steve Duras, MD, University Place, WA
“The American Physician review course for General Surgery is the most complete and comprehensive I have attended. The faculty was excellent – they seemed so sincere in wanting to teach us so we can pass the recertification test. For a busy practicing solo surgeon with limited time, it was a pleasure for me having them (the faculty & staff) be so interested in our recertification and testing.”
Steven Feldhaus, MD, Omaha, NE
"Intense but very useful and refreshing course with recent developments in all specialties included. A very good course oriented towards the ABS exam."
K.B. Deshpande, MD, Westlake, OH

"Your course was comprehensive, detailed, and your speakers were very knowledgeable."
Joe Parks, MD, Newnan, GA
"This course is a must for preparation for recertification!"
Eric Kalish, MD, Wilmington, DE
“This was a wonderful course and the material was top notch. There's too much information to review in general surgery and I was too busy in practice to come up with a comprehensive study plan on my own. SESAP alone just wasn't enough. I found the material was right on target with the exam and I had no problem passing. I knew I passed before I was halfway through the recertification exam.”
Joseph Bennett, MD, Newark, DE
“Your review course is very helpful to me because it gives me a quick and concise way to prepare for the General Surgery recertification exam. I have been away from General Surgery for the past 10 yrs, concentrating mainly in ER and Cosmetic Surgery. The live lectures are especially helpful to me, as well as the exam questions and concise course notes. This is definitely an excellent program, which is why you can back it up with your amazing triple plus guarantees. Thanks for helping me pass the recertification exam. I would highly recommend this review course to any General Surgeon due to take their recertification exam.”
David Hon, MD, FACS, Lawrenceville, GA
“Great review of the latest and up-to-date material. The independent study course was great. I could study whenever, wherever, and however I wanted to. Even though I’m in a highly specialized practice with high clinical demands… it was easy to prepare and pass!”
Thomas Shellenberger, MD, Phoenix, AZ
“I think your course was an excellent avenue for my recertification review. It was money and time well invested, as I passed my recertification test. I give your review course two thumbs up, especially since I was able to pass the exam without having practiced general surgery for the past 7 years!!!!!!”
Michell Cohn, MD, Edmond, OK
“The Pass Machine course was highly recommended by my wife, who is also a general surgeon. She took the recertification course last year and easily passed. This year I took the online course and easily passed. As a very busy surgeon in private practice and academics, this program fit perfectly into my busy schedule. As my practice has become more specialized, the need for a comprehensive review was even more important. These lectures were very focused and thorough. I will definitely be looking for this course for my next recertification.”
Keith Boone, MD, FACS, FASMBS, Fresno, CA
"I found the Online Course to be very efficient and with extensive coverage of all the subjects I required to pass my Recertification. "Well Done" and keep it up. Have already recommended it to friends and will use it again in the future!"
Jeffrey Lawhon, MD, Edenton, NC
"Excellent course. I passed the general surgery recertification exam, only using The Pass Machine for study. I would recommend to anyone taking the exam. Thank you Pass Machine!!!!!"
Kristine Carter, MD, Gulfport, MS
“This course was excellent and beyond all my expectations. Webinars and binders are so useful for daily surgical practice! I may consider doing this course again for surgical CMEs and not just for recertification. Thank you!”
Jose Vale, MD, FACS, Marion, OH
“The Pass Machine home course helped me study for and pass my General Surgery recertification exam. I am a subspecialist in Colon and Rectal Surgery and have limited my practice to my subspecialty for the past twenty years. I was apprehensive because many areas within general surgery have changed so much in the intervening years. I felt your course was an excellent preparation and liked the convenience of being able to take the course online at my own convenience and pace.”
Carey Nathan, MD, Newark, DE
“Having done no general surgery cases over the last 25 years made me concerned about preparing for this current recertification examination. I elected to use The Pass Machine as my preparation for the examination. I opted to take the course online as opposed to a weekend course requiring traveling. This allowed me to structure my preparation when I had as little as 30 min to work. It was extremely easy to load the lectures online. I found the physicians who presented the lectures to be excellent not only in their completeness and thoroughness at which they addressed their subjects, but also impressive in their knowledge base. Needless to say, there is a tremendous amount of information in any of these topics that could be tested. The focus in each individual lecture was appropriate and the information given was thorough. The subsequent practice examinations were also very helpful. The results of my studying were positive. I would wholeheartedly recommend The Pass Machine for surgeons preparing for their recertification examination.”
Eric Jaxheimer, MD, RVT, FACS, Wyomissing, PA
“I have a very busy Plastic Surgery practice but I wanted to renew my General Surgery Board certification. Being a solo practitioner, I did not have the luxury of attending a review course. Luckily, I found out about The Pass Machine online course. I enjoyed the video lectures, did the review examinations, obtained lots of CME and passed the recertification examination with a smile. Thank you.”
Ajaipal Kang, MD, Erie, PA
“The course was not only essential to my ability to pass the recertification in surgery exam, it was a great way to refresh and update my fund of knowledge. The lecturers were excellent (many were much better than last year), and the information provided was absolutely germane to the test. I would recommend this course for anyone preparing for their specialty boards. This is my second time going through the recertification process--after 20 years, I wish I had known about it the first time around--because even though I passed my boards without it, I still learned so much that would have been helpful even then!”
Sharon Keene, MD, Tucson, AZ
"You’re busy in your private practice and you don’t have much time to take off, and it just forces you to get the basics and go over all the subjects that you don’t use on a daily basis. The speakers are excellent."
Ron Arison, MD, Pompano Beach, FL
"What I like is that it’s specifically geared towards the board questions, and that part of it has been very helpful for me. It’s going to be a big part of my preparation."
Louis Certo, MD, Girard, OH
"The course is very important because it helps me to focus and points out what is important and what is less important to pass the exam."
Diedrich Holtkamp, MD, Brooklyn, NY
"I really like the speakers. I think the information varies by subject matter as to my familiarity – some areas I am familiar with and already know but some I really don’t, and it’s been a long time since I’ve looked at those things."
David Slama, MD, Rapid City, SD
"The lecture series is great – it seems very well organized. It appears to be a very comprehensive overview focusing on the areas that are most likely to appear on the exam."
Joseph Vanderlinden, MD, San Bernardino, CA
"It’s all interesting, relevant, and there’s a lot of it."
William Waldo, MD, Show Low, AZ
"Last year was crazy - I am a vascular surgeon. I have not done general surgery in over 10 years. I didn’t even have to take the gen surg recert exam. Feeling obligated to still recert in gen surg, I took your course in Chicago the last week of September because I was going to be there anyway to give a lecture elsewhere… I finished the course, gave a lecture at a separate meeting in Chicago the last weekend of the course on critical limb ischemia. The very next Wednesday, (Sept 30, 2009) I took the VASCULAR SURGERY RECERT exam and passed it. From the day of my vasc recert exam until I took the gen surg recert in early December, I did not study anything else for the gen surg recert, at all. I did not even open a book. My entire prep for that exam was sitting in the lectures in Chicago, staying awake and letting the info soak in. I did review the practice tests and questions prior, but, after the course, I did nothing else what so ever. I guess that’s why they call it the "Pass Machine!" So, I passed two ABS recert exams within three months! So, I thank you very much for the outstanding course! I would be more than happy to formally share my testimony for your company! Please tell Dr. Jack hello!"
Paul Vaughn, MD, Mesa, AZ
"Without the course, I felt overwhelmed at the sheer amount of material to read and learn. However, the course brought the material to life, and allowed me to focus on the material which was most important."

"Overall, excellent review course – best taken online. This was an enormous advantage. Well worth the cost."
Eric Young, MD, Marion, SC
"Very complete, informative and practical."
Mario Mancheno, MD, Weehawken, NJ
"I took the course online. That made it very convenient. I could do it at my own speed and it filled hours normally wasted while I am sitting in the surgeon’s lounge waiting for my cases to start."
Howard Berger, MD, Brick, NJ
"This course represents a component of one’s efforts to continue the education process – studying for a test for recertifying is admittedly daunting and intimidating. A course like this gives one the satisfaction that they have covered a large amount of testable/current information and for me represents a source of confidence as I continue in my preparations."
Thomas Boyle, MD
"I have never been able to stay awake and interested for as long and for as much material as I did for this meeting – excellent!"
Arthur Jones, MD
"I have practiced trauma & surgical critical care for 20 years. I am taking my third recertification for General Surgery. I needed a review of the other areas of general surgery. "Outstanding review. Well done."
Garron Lukas, MD
"The course highlighted my weaknesses and gave information to improve this . The slides are excellent and concise. The speakers are very good. All in all an excellent experience. I have no doubt I will pass the exam."
Thomas O’Callaghan, MD
"This was a fantastic course. The audio-visual was well done. It is so much nicer to do the internet course at your own pace instead of sitting in a room for 8 hours a day. Plus you could go over the lectures as many times as you want. The test question bank was an excellent guide. Some of the questions were actually on the test. The folder of slides was also a very good study guide to refer to."
Manjula Jeyapalan-Noone, MD, Los Gatos, CA

"I took my Board Exam this past Friday 12/5/08. I am indebted to you. This is my fourth Board Examination, I am going on 64 years of age and have been in practice since 1975. My last Board Exam was 9 years ago and it was very much like the SESAP courses that I had taken. I have taken every SESAP course including the last one (13). Quite frankly, I did not feel like I learned anything from these last SESAPs. Since your course could be taken on line, I got interested in it. I found most of your lectures and lecturers to be excellent material and I enjoyed most of them, for the sole purpose of learning, it was a pleasure. But I did not like your test materials. I thought there were too easy and not representative of what the real exam would be like.
Boy, was I wrong. You hit it right on the button. In fact, how can you avoid being accused of "cheating" since your style of questions, and questions themselves are so close to the exam? I know I cannot discuss the questions on the exam, but if someone were to ask me what it was about, I would say, take "The Pass Machine"! I do believe that I might have passed the exam without your help, but that is a mighty big "might". There was only one question that I had no idea what the answer might have been. There were many questions that I could answer correctly because you taught how to reason the answers and questions. There were many questions that you directly addressed in your three recertification exams. And your lectures taught way over the exams. Needless to say, I am very glad I took your course.
I will be filling out your course evaluation form, and I will be in touch to tell you the final results. Again, thank you, thank you very much."
George H. Pfaltzgraff, MD, Hampton, IA
"Dr. Krasuski: This was a unique learning experience for me. This was the first time I took a home study course. My practice is very much limited to breast and elective general surgery, hence I was apprehensive to fast approaching recertification examination. After registering and receiving the course material via internet connection, learning became much fun. All speakers were outstanding. I regained my confidence and I took my examination on December 9, 2008. I believe I did well. Keep the good work! Sincerely yours,"
Qamar Amiruddin, MD, North Baldwin, NY
"I find the course material presented is very useful for exam and for practice."
Satyavardhana Yerubandi, MD, Huntsville, AL
"This course provided me with a comprehensive, practical and interesting review of general surgery which has been very useful in preparing for my recertification exam."
Marvin Nevonen, MD, Duluth, MN
"It is very difficult for me to leave town, so I did the home version of the course. It worked out extremely well for me because it allowed me to view the webinars at times that my schedule permitted and to view them repeatedly. The proof that the content was what I needed is that I passed my exam."
Paul Ghaemmaghami, MD, Glen Allen, VA

This information is updated weekly. For the most current update, please visit the ABS website.
The latest as of January 8, 2021:
Update September 16, 2020: Rescheduled Date Announced for 2020 Specialty Exams.
The 2020 Vascular Surgery Qualifying Exam (QE), Pediatric Surgery QE, Complex General Surgical Oncology QE and Surgical Critical Care Certifying Exam (CE) have been rescheduled for April 12, 2021, and will be held at Pearson VUE centers across the country.
This is the earliest and only date that Pearson VUE is able to provide for these exams during this academic year. At this time, there is nothing that candidates must do for the rescheduled exam. Registration information will be sent to eligible candidates by mid-November. If you are a candidate for certification in vascular surgery, pediatric surgery, complex general surgical oncology or surgical critical care and have a conflict with the new exam date, please contact the ABS office as soon as possible.
Certifying Examination dates for those specialties that require oral exams as part of the certification process will be announced as soon as they are finalized. All oral examinations in this academic year will be delivered virtually. Further information about these exams will follow.
Update August 27, 2020: FAQ Videos - 2020 General Surgery Qualifying Exam Solution.
ABS President and CEO Dr. Jo Buyske goes into more detailed explanations for some of the FAQs that have been answered about the solution for the 2020 General Surgery Qualifying Exam.
ABS Announces Solution for 2020 General Surgery Qualifying Exam.
The American Board of Surgery (ABS) announced today a solution to the 2020 General Surgery Qualifying Exam (QE). Candidates who were affected by the attempted administration of this exam in July were notified of this solution via email earlier today.
After reviewing and evaluating the many suggestions and solutions proposed by affected candidates, program directors, and other members of the surgical community, the ABS, along with the General Surgery Board, and the Assessment Committee of the ABS Council, have developed a solution that meets the following principles:
- Recognizes the negative experience of the 2020 QE candidates;
- Allows equitable access to certification in this academic year;
- Maintains exam security and reliability;
- Maintains standards set by both the ABS and the ABMS;
- Minimizes the likelihood of widespread disruption.
Update August 5, 2020: Continuous Certification Registration and Reporting Update.
In recognition of the impact that the COVID-19 pandemic is having on our diplomates, their practices, and their professional and personal lives, ABS is moving the due date for reporting requirements (CME, case logs, letters of recommendation) to Friday, Jan. 15, 2021.
We have also extended the window for taking the Continuous Certification Assessment, in order to provide more flexibility for those who are due for an assessment this year. Registration for the assessment will open on Aug. 10, and at that time, all diplomate profiles will be updated to reflect current standing with ongoing program requirements. Registration will remain open until the assessment window closes on Nov. 16, and the assessment itself will become available on Sept. 7.
Update July 31, 2020: September 2020 Specialty Exams Postponed. The ABS, along with the Vascular Surgery Board, Pediatric Surgery Board, Complex General Surgical Oncology Board and Trauma, Burns and Surgical Critical Care Board, have made the difficult decision to postpone the administration of the 2020 Vascular Surgery QE, Pediatric Surgery QE, Complex General Surgical Oncology QE and Surgical Critical Care CE. We do not yet have a new date for this exam, but it will not proceed as originally scheduled for September 14 and 15, 2020.

Update July 21, 2020: FAQs - 2020 Virtual General Surgery Qualifying Exam
Update July 17, 2020: ABS Issuing Refunds, Launching Security Investigation for Virtual 2020 General Surgery QE.
The attempted administration of the virtual 2020 American Board of Surgery General Surgery Qualifying Exam was a failure. There is no way to sugarcoat it, and there is nothing that we, as an organization, can say right now to make those who were affected feel any better. We acknowledge that our failed attempt to deliver this exam has resulted in an incredible amount of stress for candidates. You are frustrated, angry and disappointed, and you have every reason to feel so. We failed to deliver the exam in a way that meets the standards to which we hold ourselves.
While we cannot give you back the time that you spent studying, away from your family, in the midst of the worst public health crisis that we have seen in a century, we can and will refund exam fees starting immediately. You should see the charges refunded to your credit card within two weeks. You do not need to submit a request for the refund; they are being issued automatically.
