The Best Way to Lock in What You Study for the Board Exams

There are countless ways to study for the board exams, and you may already know what works best for you. But if you find that you study materials and then do not really remember them when you need them, you might want to try this program.

The first priority when you study for the board exams is to have accurate targeting of the material you want to learn. When I work with individuals, I look at their board scores and I help them to decide which areas they need to focus on to get maximum improvement in their overall score. We do this by combining:

  • Areas they have the most room for improvement
  • Areas they are most passionate
  • The percentage of distribution of tests questions included on the Board Exam

I found it to be a great way for keeping things you study from going through the revolving door. Do you ever feel like you learn something and then the next day or a couple days later you do not know it at all? This is the method I use to get something locked into my brain, so I have access to it weeks or months later when I take my board exam.

FLASH CARDS

Sounds rudimentary right? I like to use 4 by 6 cards because I’m tired of staring at computer screens all day. However there are also great electronic versions of flash cards that you can find by googling them.

THE 1/3/7/14/28 Method:

This Is the method that I use to learn things and drive them deep into my memory circuits. Study them on day one and sort out what you don’t know well. Go over that in your flash card system as many times as you need that day until you have it right. Repeat the method the next day on the same material that you had trouble with the day before. Then go over those same cards more at 3 days, 7 days, 14 days, and 28 days later. I found this to be an incredibly effective method to learn things so they stick.

Use A Tape Recorder:

Get a simple tape recorder; an MP3 recorder or recording program on your phone. Record the facts you are having trouble with and want to learn thoroughly. Listen to them repeatedly while you’re cooking, while you’re driving in the car, or before you go to bed. This provides an alternate channel to get the material into your brain. You can use the API lectures in the same way by listening to them in these settings. I even had a woman come up to me at one of our live courses and tell me that her daughter loved the sound of my voice because she had heard it so much while mom was using the lectures to study. Her daughter would say “There is that nice Dr. Sheeler who’s helping mommy pass her board exam.”
